The Challenge

Despite the growing demand for STEM professionals, many high school students lack exposure to STEM careers and the pathways required to pursue them. Key challenges include:

  1. Limited access to career information and role models in STEM fields.

  2. A perception that STEM careers are inaccessible or too challenging.

  3. Insufficient hands-on learning opportunities to spark interest and build confidence.

To address these barriers, STEMQuest set out to create an engaging, user-friendly platform that provides students with the tools, inspiration, and guidance needed to explore STEM careers confidently.

My Plan

  • Provide students with comprehensive information about STEM careers, including real-world applications and pathways.

  • Utilize gamification and interactive content to make STEM learning exciting and accessible.

  • Offer tailored recommendations based on students' interests, strengths, and goals

  • Equip teachers with resources to integrate STEMQuest into classroom activities.

The Process

  • Research and Discovery

    • Connected with educators, and STEM professionals to identify pain points and opportunities.

    • Analyzed existing STEM outreach programs and career guidance tools to understand gaps in the market.

  • Design & Prototyping

    • Created user personas to ensure the app catered to diverse student needs and audiences such as educators looking to incorperate hands-on learning to classroom teachings and homeschooling parents.

    • Developed wireframes and prototypes, focusing on an intuitive user interface and engaging user experience.

  • Testing

    • Submitted design prototypes to the Science Ingenium hackathon to be tested and reviewed by professionals

Lessons Learnt

  • User-Centric Design: Communication with students and educators was critical in creating an app that met user needs.

  • Accessibility Matters: Simplifying language due to audience base and offering visual elements made STEM concepts more relatable and interactive.

  • Emphasizing Expectations: Highlighting learning outcomes and materials needed for projects helped students prepare

Future Direction

  • Expanding content to include emerging STEM fields like AI, renewable energy, and space exploration.

  • Enhancing personalization features through advanced AI algorithms.

  • Building a mentorship platform to connect students directly with STEM professionals.

  • Incorporating AI-powered suggestions for careers, courses, and extracurriculars based on user profiles.

  • Mini-games and activities to build key STEM skills while earning badges and rewards.

  • Including a suite of tools for teachers to track student progress and integrate app content into lesson plans.

  • Scaling the app, partnering with more STEM companies and organizations; and reaching more schools and communities globally.
